How the test works
Test mode and practice mode
In test mode you answer every question first and see your score, the time you took and the answers at the end. In practice mode you press Check after each answer to see right away whether it is correct, with the explanation.
How answers are scored
For questions with a number as the answer, you can type a whole number, a decimal such as 2.5, or a fraction such as 3/4. A pound sign is ignored, and a fraction and its decimal value count as the same answer. Multiple choice questions have one correct choice.
Printing the test and the answer key
Use Print the test for a paper copy with a space for each answer, and Print the answer key for the matching answers. Both print without the rest of the page.

Answers and explanations
| Question | Answer | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 66,382 | Adding 10,000 changes the ten thousands digit from 5 to 6, so the answer is 66,382. |
| 2 | 48,000 | The hundreds digit is 8, so round up to 48,000. |
| 3 | 2,422 | 300 × 7 = 2,100, 40 × 7 = 280 and 6 × 7 = 42. 2,100 + 280 + 42 = 2,422. |
| 4 | 1,200 | 48 × 100 = 4,800, and 25 is a quarter of 100, so 4,800 ÷ 4 = 1,200. |
| 5 | 156 | 600 ÷ 6 = 100, 300 ÷ 6 = 50 and 36 ÷ 6 = 6. 100 + 50 + 6 = 156. |
| 6 | 24 | One third of 36 is 12, so two thirds is 24. |
| 7 | 7/10 | 4/5 is 8/10. 8/10 − 1/10 = 7/10, which is already in simplest form. |
| 8 | 6.25 | Line up the decimal points: 3.45 + 2.80 = 6.25. |
| 9 | 45 | 25% is a quarter, and 180 ÷ 4 = 45. |
| 10 | 5 | Start at −4 and count up 9: the answer is 5. |
| 11 | 53 | 39 = 3 × 13, 51 = 3 × 17 and 57 = 3 × 19. 53 has no factors except 1 and itself. |
| 12 | 9 | Length = area ÷ width = 72 ÷ 8 = 9. |
| 13 | 2,500 | 1 litre is 1,000 millilitres, so 2.5 litres is 2,500 millilitres. |
| 14 | 144 | 12 × 12 = 144. |
| 15 | 360 | 36 × 5 = 180 packs, and 180 × £2 = £360. |
Tips for Year 5 maths
- Round to the nearest thousand by looking at the hundreds digit.
- To find a fraction of an amount, divide by the denominator, then multiply by the numerator.
- Remember that 25% is a quarter, 50% is a half and 10% is a tenth. They make percentage questions quicker.
