How the test works
Test mode and practice mode
In test mode you answer every question first and see your score, the time you took and the answers at the end. In practice mode you press Check after each answer to see right away whether it is correct, with the explanation.
How answers are scored
For questions with a number as the answer, you can type a whole number, a decimal such as 2.5, or a fraction such as 3/4. A pound sign is ignored, and a fraction and its decimal value count as the same answer. Multiple choice questions have one correct choice.
Printing the test and the answer key
Use Print the test for a paper copy with a space for each answer, and Print the answer key for the matching answers. Both print without the rest of the page.

Answers and explanations
| Question | Answer | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 21 | Multiply first: 3 × 6 = 18. Then 7 + 18 − 4 = 21. |
| 2 | 12 | Brackets first: 14 − 5 = 9. Then 9 × 4 = 36 and 36 ÷ 3 = 12. |
| 3 | 11,388 | 438 × 20 = 8,760 and 438 × 6 = 2,628. 8,760 + 2,628 = 11,388. |
| 4 | 84 | 18 × 84 = 1,512, so the answer is 84. |
| 5 | 1/2 | Multiply the numerators and the denominators: 6/12, which simplifies to 1/2. |
| 6 | 1/6 | Dividing 5/6 by 5 divides the numerator, giving 1/6. |
| 7 | 84 | 10% of 240 is 24, so 30% is 72 and 5% is 12. 72 + 12 = 84. |
| 8 | 24 | There are 2 + 3 = 5 parts. One part is 40 ÷ 5 = 8, so blue is 3 × 8 = 24. |
| 9 | 9 | Add 7 to get 5x = 45, then divide by 5: x = 9. |
| 10 | 30 | 3 × 4 = 12 and 2 × 9 = 18. 12 + 18 = 30. |
| 11 | 18 | The sum is 90 and there are 5 numbers. 90 ÷ 5 = 18. |
| 12 | 65 | Angles on a straight line add up to 180°, so x = 180 − 115 = 65. |
| 13 | 120 | Volume = length × width × height = 6 × 5 × 4 = 120. |
| 14 | 14.7 | 42 × 35 = 1,470. There are two decimal places in the question, so the answer is 14.70, or 14.7. |
| 15 | 3/8 | 0.375 is 375/1000, which simplifies to 3/8. |
Tips for Year 6 maths
- Do brackets first, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.
- For ratio questions, add the parts first, find the value of one part, then multiply.
- Check an algebra answer by putting it back into the equation.
