Test mode and practice mode

In test mode you answer every question first and see your score, the time you took and the answers at the end. In practice mode you press Check after each answer to see right away whether it is correct, with the explanation.

How answers are scored

For questions with a number as the answer, you can type a whole number, a decimal such as 2.5, or a fraction such as 3/4. A pound sign is ignored, and a fraction and its decimal value count as the same answer. Multiple choice questions have one correct choice.

Printing the test and the answer key

Use Print the test for a paper copy with a space for each answer, and Print the answer key for the matching answers. Both print without the rest of the page.

Answers and explanations

QuestionAnswerExplanation
1567 × 8 = 56. Think 7 × 4 = 28 and double it.
21089 × 10 = 90 and 9 × 2 = 18. 90 + 18 = 108.
398 × 9 = 72, so 72 ÷ 8 = 9.
45,376Adding 1,000 changes the thousands digit from 4 to 5, so the answer is 5,376.
52,952Taking away 100 changes the hundreds digit from 0 to 9 and the thousands digit from 3 to 2, giving 2,952.
64,212Add the columns from the right and exchange when a column reaches 10. The total is 4,212.
72,2822,718 + 2,282 = 5,000, so the difference is 2,282.
85.404 × £1.35 = £5.40. 1.35 × 4 is 4 + 1.20 + 0.20 = 5.40.
97/10The denominators match, so add the numerators: 3 + 4 = 7, giving 7/10.
100.077/100 means 7 hundredths, which is 0.07.
1138Add all four sides: 12 + 7 + 12 + 7 = 38.
1254Area = length × width = 9 × 6 = 54.
133595 − 60 = 35, so the film lasts 1 hour 35 minutes.
1442XL is 40 and II is 2, so XLII is 42.
151928 × 20 = 160 and 8 × 4 = 32. 160 + 32 = 192.

Tips for Year 4 maths

  • Practise the times tables out loud until the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 tables feel automatic.
  • For four-digit addition and subtraction, line up the columns and exchange from the right.
  • Use a number line when you add pounds and pence, and check that the answer sounds sensible.
