How the test works
Test mode and practice mode
In test mode you answer every question first and see your score, the time you took and the answers at the end. In practice mode you press Check after each answer to see right away whether it is correct, with the explanation.
How answers are scored
For questions with a number as the answer, you can type a whole number, a decimal such as 2.5, or a fraction such as 3/4. A fraction and its decimal value count as the same answer. Multiple choice questions have one correct choice.
Printing the test and the answer key
Use Print the test for a paper copy with a space for each answer, and Print the answer key for the matching answers. Both print without the rest of the page.

Answers and explanations
| Question | Answer | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 36 | 10% of 240 is 24 and 5% is 12. 24 + 12 = 36. |
| 2 | 17/20 | 3/5 = 12/20 and 1/4 = 5/20. 12/20 + 5/20 = 17/20. |
| 3 | 7 | Subtract 5 to get 2x = 14, then divide by 2: x = 7. |
| 4 | 36 | 144 ÷ 12 = 12 and 8 × 3 = 24. 12 + 24 = 36. |
| 5 | 90 | 7.5 × 12 = 7.5 × 10 + 7.5 × 2 = 75 + 15 = 90. |
| 6 | 30 | 18 ÷ 0.6 is the same as 180 ÷ 6, which is 30. |
| 7 | 25 | 3² = 9 and 4² = 16. 9 + 16 = 25. |
| 8 | 9 | 9 × 9 = 81, so the square root of 81 is 9. |
| 9 | 45 | Multiply by 100 to turn a decimal into a percent: 0.45 × 100 = 45%. |
| 10 | 0.625 | 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625. |
| 11 | 42 | 30% of 60 is 18. 60 − 18 = 42. |
| 12 | 60 | 240 ÷ 4 = 60 miles per hour. |
| 13 | 9 | Divide both sides by 5 to get x − 2 = 7, then add 2: x = 9. |
| 14 | 38 | 2 × (12 + 7) = 2 × 19 = 38. |
| 15 | 28.26 | Area = π × r² = 3.14 × 9 = 28.26. |
| 16 | -1 | −9 + 14 = 5, and 5 − 6 = −1. |
| 17 | 36 | Multiples of 12 are 12, 24 and 36. 36 is also a multiple of 9. |
| 18 | 2 | Dividing by 1/4 is the same as multiplying by 4: 1/2 × 4 = 2. |
| 19 | 12 | One pen costs $1.50, so 8 pens cost $12. |
| 20 | 0.7 | 0.7 is 70%. The others are 3/5 = 60%, 65% and 0.07 = 7%. |
Tips for taking the test
- Start with the questions you can do quickly, then come back to the harder ones.
- Estimate first. If you get 420 for a percent of 240, the answer cannot be right because it is larger than 240.
- Use the skills table on the result page to choose what to practice next.
