Answers and explanations

QuestionAnswerExplanation
12515 is 5 times 3, so multiply 5 by 5 to get 25 girls.
21710% of 85 is 8.5, so 20% is 17.
37Start at −8 and move 15 to the right: the result is 7.
442A negative number times a negative number is positive: 6 × 7 = 42.
514Subtract 9 from both sides: x = 14.
613Divide both sides by 4: x = 13.
735Area = base × height ÷ 2 = 10 × 7 ÷ 2 = 35.
810The sum is 50 and there are 5 numbers. 50 ÷ 5 = 10.
9813 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81.
109The median is the middle number when the values are in order. The middle of five numbers is the third, which is 9.
1112The largest number that divides both 24 and 36 is 12.
1224Multiples of 8 are 8, 16 and 24. 24 is also a multiple of 6.
1350150 ÷ 3 = 50 miles per hour.
143415% of 40 is 6. 40 − 6 = 34.
150.3753 ÷ 8 = 0.375.

Tips for Grade 6 math

  • For ratio problems, find the multiplier first, such as 15 is 3 times 5, then apply it to the other part.
  • Check an equation by putting your answer back in place of x.
  • For percents, find 10% first by moving the decimal point, then build up from there.
