How the test works
Test mode and practice mode
In test mode you answer every question first and see your score, the time you took and the answers at the end. In practice mode you press Check after each answer to see right away whether it is correct, with the explanation.
How answers are scored
For questions with a number as the answer, you can type a whole number, a decimal such as 2.5, or a fraction such as 3/4. A dollar or pound sign is ignored, and a fraction and its decimal value count as the same answer. Multiple choice questions have one correct choice.
Printing the test and the answer key
Use Print the test for a paper copy with a space for each answer, and Print the answer key for the matching answers. Both print without the rest of the page.

Answers and explanations
| Question | Answer | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 14 | Brackets first: 9 − 5 = 4. Then 4 × 4 = 16, 16 ÷ 2 = 8, and 6 + 8 = 14. |
| 2 | 13 | Expand to get 4x − 8 = 3x + 5. Subtract 3x to get x − 8 = 5, so x = 13. |
| 3 | 16 | 2/5 of 60 is 24, and 2/3 of 24 is 16. |
| 4 | 60 | The sale price is 80% of the original, so the original is 48 ÷ 0.8 = 60. |
| 5 | 8 | In order the numbers are 3, 5, 8, 9, 12. The middle number is 8. |
| 6 | 2/5 | 4 of the 10 marbles are red, so 4/10, which simplifies to 2/5. |
| 7 | 7 | Length plus width is 17. If the length is the width plus 3, then 2 × width + 3 = 17, so the width is 7. |
| 8 | 55 | Angles on a straight line add up to 180°, so x = 55. |
| 9 | 5 | 75 = 25 × 3, so the square root of 75 is 5 times the square root of 3. a = 5. |
| 10 | 10 | The opposite side is hypotenuse × sin 30° = 20 × 0.5 = 10. |
| 11 | 5 | Replace x with 3: 9 + 2y = 19, so 2y = 10 and y = 5. |
| 12 | 11 | x − 4 = 7 or x − 4 = −7, so x = 11 or x = −3. The larger is 11. |
| 13 | 96 | She runs a mile in 8 minutes, so 12 miles take 12 × 8 = 96. |
| 14 | 4 | 4² − 4 − 12 = 0. The factored form is (x − 4)(x + 3) = 0. |
| 15 | 50 | Area = half × (sum of the parallel sides) × height = 10 × 5 = 50. |
Tips for ACT math
- Pace yourself: the ACT gives about one minute per question, so skip and return to hard ones.
- Learn the basic trig ratios and the 30-60-90 triangle values.
- Check your answer against the question once more, since many wrong choices are partial answers.
