How the test works

Test mode and practice mode

In test mode you answer every question first and see your score, the time you took and the answers at the end. In practice mode you press Check after each answer to see right away whether it is correct, with the explanation.

How answers are scored

For questions with a number as the answer, you can type a whole number, a decimal such as 2.5, or a fraction such as 3/4. A dollar or pound sign is ignored, and a fraction and its decimal value count as the same answer. Multiple choice questions have one correct choice.

Printing the test and the answer key

Use Print the test for a paper copy with a space for each answer, and Print the answer key for the matching answers. Both print without the rest of the page.

  15. An item costs $80 and the sales tax is 7.5%. What is the total cost in dollars?

Answers and explanations

QuestionAnswerExplanation
125The increase is $15. 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25, which is 25%.
20.3$3.60 ÷ 12 = $0.30 per ounce.
34Brackets first: 4 + 3 = 7. Then 2 × 7 = 14 and 18 − 14 = 4.
432 1/2 = 2.5 and 1 1/5 = 1.2. 2.5 × 1.2 = 3.
584The total is 420 and there are 5 scores. 420 ÷ 5 = 84.
615.5With six values, the median is the mean of the middle two: (15 + 16) ÷ 2 = 15.5.
76Add 8 to get 5x = 30, then divide by 5: x = 6.
81−2 × 3 = −6, and −6 + 7 = 1.
980The rectangle is 60. The triangle is half × 10 × 4 = 20. Total = 80.
10257² + 24² = 49 + 576 = 625, and the square root of 625 is 25.
1160Volume = length × width × height = 60.
121/66 of the 36 equally likely outcomes add up to 7, so 6/36 = 1/6.
13(x + 3)(x + 4)Look for two numbers that multiply to 12 and add to 7. They are 3 and 4.
141255 × 5 × 5 = 125.
1586Tax = 0.075 × 80 = 6. The total is 80 + 6 = 86.
