How the test works

Test mode and practice mode

In test mode you answer every question first and see your score, the time you took and the answers at the end. In practice mode you press Check after each answer to see right away whether it is correct, with the explanation.

How answers are scored

For questions with a number as the answer, you can type a whole number, a decimal such as 2.5, or a fraction such as 3/4. A dollar or pound sign is ignored, and a fraction and its decimal value count as the same answer. Multiple choice questions have one correct choice.

Printing the test and the answer key

Use Print the test for a paper copy with a space for each answer, and Print the answer key for the matching answers. Both print without the rest of the page.

Answers and explanations

QuestionAnswerExplanation
15Subtract 7 to get 3x = 15, then divide by 3: x = 5.
210010% of 250 is 25, so 40% is 4 × 25 = 100.
33Subtract the second equation from the first: 3y = 9, so y = 3.
4294² = 16, so 2 × 16 − 3 = 29.
52Slope = change in y ÷ change in x = 8 ÷ 4 = 2.
67Factor as (x − 2)(x − 5) = 0, so x = 2 or 5. The sum is 7.
752⁵ = 32, so x = 5.
87.5The recipe uses 3/12 = 0.25 cups per cookie, so 30 cookies need 7.5 cups.
914r² = 49, so r = 7. Circumference = 2πr = 14π, so k = 14.
1065The angles add up to 180°, so the third is 180 − 115 = 65.
1120The total is 6 × 14 = 84. The five known numbers add up to 64, so the sixth is 20.
1215The increase is 1,200. 1,200 ÷ 8,000 = 0.15, which is 15%.
13159² + 12² = 81 + 144 = 225, and the square root of 225 is 15.
14x² + 6x + 9(x + 3)(x + 3) = x² + 3x + 3x + 9 = x² + 6x + 9.
158It uses 3/90 gallons per mile. For 240 miles that is 240 ÷ 90 × 3 = 8.

Tips for SAT math

  • Read each question twice and underline what is being asked before you calculate.
  • Plug an answer choice back into the equation when you are stuck on a multiple choice question.
  • Know the square of a sum: (x + a)² = x² + 2ax + a².
