A weighted grade calculator finds your overall grade when different parts of a course count for different amounts. Enter each score with its weight, and the calculator shows your weighted average and a letter grade. It also works as a gradebook calculator for the final exam: enter the weight of the final and the grade you want, and it shows the score you need.
For a single test percentage, use the test score calculator. For a term GPA from letter grades, use the GPA calculator.

How a weighted grade is calculated
The weighted grade formula
Multiply each score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight.
Weighted grade = (Score₁ × Weight₁ + Score₂ × Weight₂ + …) ÷ (Weight₁ + Weight₂ + …)
Where:
- Score = your percent on that assignment or category
- Weight = how much that category counts toward the course grade, in percent
Weights that do not add up to 100
The calculator divides by the total of the weights you enter. If you have only entered part of the course, the result is your grade so far on that part, not a projected final grade.
Score needed on the final exam
If the scores you entered make up the rest of the course, the final exam score you need is:
Needed = (Desired − Current × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight
Here the final weight is written as a decimal, so a 35% final is 0.35. This assumes the scores you entered account for the other part of the course.
Worked examples
Example 1: Grade so far and the final exam score needed
| Category | Score | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Homework | 92% | 20% |
| Quizzes | 85% | 20% |
| Midterm | 78% | 25% |
The weights add up to 65%, and the weighted sum is 92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 25 = 1840 + 1700 + 1950 = 5490.
Current grade = 5490 ÷ 65 = 84.46%
The final exam is worth 35% and the student wants an overall 85%.
Needed = (85 − 84.46 × 0.65) ÷ 0.35
Needed = (85 − 54.9) ÷ 0.35 = 30.1 ÷ 0.35 = 86%
The student needs about 86% on the final to finish with an 85% in the course.
Example 2: Two categories
Homework averages 90% and counts for 30%. Tests average 80% and count for 70%.
Weighted grade = (90 × 30 + 80 × 70) ÷ 100 = (2700 + 5600) ÷ 100 = 83%
That is a B on the +/− scale used by the calculator.
Why a weighted grade differs from a simple average
The simple average of 92, 85 and 78 is 85, but the weighted grade in Example 1 is 84.46%. The midterm is worth more than the quizzes and its lower score pulls the weighted result down.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each score by its weight, add the products, and divide by the sum of the weights. For scores of 90 and 80 with weights of 30 and 70, the result is (90 × 30 + 80 × 70) ÷ 100 = 83%.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
The calculator divides by the total weight you entered, so the result is your grade on the part of the course you have entered so far.
How do I find the score I need on the final exam?
Enter the final exam weight and the overall grade you want. The calculator uses the formula above and shows the score needed. If it is above 100%, the goal may not be reachable without extra credit.
What is the difference between a weighted grade and an average?
An average counts every score equally. A weighted grade counts each category by its weight, so a heavily weighted exam changes the result more than a quiz.
Are the letter grades official?
No. They use a common +/− scale as a guide, and your school or teacher decides the real cut-offs.
