A GPA calculator turns your letter grades and course credits into a grade point average on the 4.0 scale. Add each course, pick the grade and enter the credits. The calculator shows your GPA for the term, the total credits and quality points, and the working for every course.
If you already have a GPA from earlier terms, enter it with your completed credits and the calculator also gives your cumulative GPA. To see what a single test or assignment is worth as a percent first, use the test score calculator.

How GPA is calculated
The GPA formula
Each course contributes quality points, which are the grade points multiplied by the credits. The GPA is the total quality points divided by the total credits.
Quality points = Grade points × Credits
GPA = Total quality points ÷ Total credits
Where:
- Grade points = the value of the letter grade on the scale below
- Credits = the credit hours for the course
Grade point scale used by this calculator
| Letter grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 |
| A | 4.0 |
| A− | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B− | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C− | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D− | 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
Schools differ. Some give an A+ more than 4.0, and some do not use plus and minus grades at all. If your school uses a different scale, check it before relying on the result.
Worked examples
Example 1: One term with four courses
| Course | Grade | Credits | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | A | 3 | 4.0 × 3 = 12 |
| Algebra | B+ | 4 | 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 |
| Biology | A− | 4 | 3.7 × 4 = 14.8 |
| History | B | 3 | 3.0 × 3 = 9 |
The credits add up to 3 + 4 + 4 + 3 = 14, and the quality points add up to 12 + 13.2 + 14.8 + 9 = 49.
GPA = 49 ÷ 14 = 3.5
Example 2: Cumulative GPA
A student has a 3.2 GPA over 30 completed credits. This term they take Chemistry (B, 4 credits) and Art (A, 2 credits).
The term has 3.0 × 4 + 4.0 × 2 = 20 quality points over 6 credits, a term GPA of 20 ÷ 6 = 3.33.
Cumulative GPA = (3.2 × 30 + 20) ÷ (30 + 6)
Cumulative GPA = 116 ÷ 36 = 3.22
Why credits matter
A 4-credit course moves the GPA more than a 2-credit course with the same grade, because it adds more quality points and more credits to the totals.
Weighted and unweighted GPA
This calculator gives an unweighted GPA. Some schools add extra grade points for honors or advanced courses to produce a weighted GPA. If yours does, use your school’s grade point values for those courses, because they are not built into this tool.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GPA with credits?
Multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add those quality points, and divide by the total credits. In the example above, 49 quality points over 14 credits gives a 3.5 GPA.
How do I calculate a cumulative GPA?
Multiply your current GPA by the credits you have completed, add the new quality points, and divide by the combined credits. Enter your current GPA and completed credits in the optional fields and the calculator does this for you.
Does an A+ count as 4.0?
On this scale, yes. Some schools count an A+ as 4.3, so check your own scale.
How are pass or fail courses counted?
Pass or fail courses are usually left out of the GPA. To exclude one here, leave its credits blank or enter 0.
Can I use this for high school and college?
Yes, as long as your school uses an unweighted 4.0 scale like the one shown above.
