How to convert minutes to decimal hours

The formula

There are 60 minutes in an hour, so divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours.

decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600

To convert only minutes, set the hours to zero. For 37 minutes, 37 ÷ 60 = 0.6167 hours.

Converting decimal hours back to minutes

Keep the whole number as the hours, then multiply the decimal part by 60 to get the minutes.

minutes = (decimal hours − whole hours) × 60

Why timesheets use decimal hours

Pay is calculated as hours multiplied by a rate, and that is easy only when the hours are a single decimal number. 6 hours 30 minutes cannot be multiplied directly, but 6.5 hours can.
