How to convert to and from military time
Standard time to military time
- For AM hours from 1 to 11, keep the hour and add a leading zero below 10. So 7:45 AM is 0745.
- For 12 AM, which is midnight, the hour becomes 00. So 12:15 AM is 0015.
- For 12 PM, which is noon, the hour stays 12. So 12:30 PM is 1230.
- For PM hours from 1 to 11, add 12 to the hour. So 5:30 PM is 17:30, written 1730.
Military hour = 12-hour hour + 12 (for 1 PM to 11 PM)
Military time to standard time
- For 0100 to 1159, the time is AM and the hour is unchanged, so 0745 is 7:45 AM.
- For 0000 to 0059, the hour is 12 AM, so 0015 is 12:15 AM.
- For 1200 to 1259, the time is PM and the hour is unchanged, so 1230 is 12:30 PM.
- For 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 from the hour and use PM, so 1830 is 6:30 PM.
12-hour hour = Military hour − 12 (for 1300 to 2359)

5 + 12 = 17, so 5:30 PM = 1730
It is commonly read aloud as seventeen thirty hours.
Example 2: 2:30 pm
2 + 12 = 14, so 2:30 PM = 1430
Example 3: 11:59 pm
11 + 12 = 23, so 11:59 PM = 2359
Example 4: 0745
The hour is below 12, so the time is AM: 0745 is 7:45 AM.
Reading military time aloud
A common way to say military time is to read the hour as two digits, then either hundred when the minutes are 00 or the minutes as two digits, followed by hours. So 0800 is zero eight hundred hours, 1730 is seventeen thirty hours and 0805 is zero eight zero five hours. Practice varies between organisations, so follow the convention you were taught.
Midnight: 0000 or 2400
Both are used. 0000 is the start of a day, and 2400 is sometimes written for the end of the same day. The converter treats 2400 as 0000.
