How the test works

Test mode and practice mode

In test mode you answer every question first and see your score, the time you took and the answers at the end. In practice mode you press Check after each answer to see right away whether it is correct, with the explanation.

How answers are scored

For questions with a number as the answer, you can type a whole number, a decimal such as 2.5, or a fraction such as 3/4. A dollar or pound sign is ignored, and a fraction and its decimal value count as the same answer. Multiple choice questions have one correct choice.

Printing the test and the answer key

Use Print the test for a paper copy with a space for each answer, and Print the answer key for the matching answers. Both print without the rest of the page.

Answers and explanations

QuestionAnswerExplanation
111Subtract 9 to get 2x = 22, then divide by 2: x = 11.
214x² = 4, so 3 × 4 = 12. Then −x = 2, so 12 + 2 = 14.
31210% of 80 is 8 and 5% is 4. 8 + 4 = 12.
419/123/4 = 9/12 and 5/6 = 10/12. 9/12 + 10/12 = 19/12.
5-2Slope = change in y ÷ change in x = −8 ÷ 4 = −2.
664Multiply the exponents: (2³)² = 2⁶ = 64.
7(x − 3)(x + 3)x² − 9 is a difference of two squares, which factors as (x − 3)(x + 3).
83Factor as (x − 2)(x − 3) = 0, so x = 2 or x = 3. The larger is 3.
978.5The radius is 5, so the area is π × 5² = 3.14 × 25 = 78.5.
1060Speed = distance ÷ time = 150 ÷ 2.5 = 60.
11x > 5Add 3 to get 2x > 10, then divide by 2: x > 5.
124Add the equations to get 3x = 12, so x = 4.
1340There are 8 parts. One part is 8, so the larger number is 5 × 8 = 40.
1410The differences are 6 and 8. 6² + 8² = 100, and the square root of 100 is 10.
151/2There are 10 marbles and 5 are not green, so 5/10, which simplifies to 1/2.

Tips for TSI math

  • Practise factoring and the quadratic patterns until you can spot them quickly.
  • Write the formula first, then substitute the numbers, for geometry and distance questions.
  • Check a systems of equations answer in both equations.
