Test mode and practice mode

In test mode you answer every question first and see your score, the time you took and the answers at the end. In practice mode you press Check after each answer to see right away whether it is correct, with the explanation.

How answers are scored

For questions with a number as the answer, you can type a whole number, a decimal such as 2.5, or a fraction such as 3/4. A fraction and its decimal value count as the same answer. Multiple choice questions have one correct choice.

Printing the test and the answer key

Answers and explanations

QuestionAnswerExplanation
1179 + 1 = 10, and 7 more makes 17.
2915 − 5 = 10, and 1 more is taken away, so 9.
3434 tens is 40 and 3 ones is 3, so the number is 43.
46565 has 6 tens, and 56 has 5 tens, so 65 is greater. The others are all less than 56.
56Count up from 8 to 14, or think 14 − 8 = 6.
644Adding 10 changes the tens digit: 3 tens becomes 4 tens, so 44.
762Taking away 10 changes the tens digit: 7 tens becomes 6 tens, so 62.
8712 − 5 = 7.
9156 + 9 = 15.
107 − 2 = 57 − 2 is 5. The others are wrong: 6 + 3 = 9, 4 + 4 = 8 and 9 − 5 = 4.
1120Add 5 each time: 15 + 5 = 20.
12157 + 3 = 10, then 10 + 5 = 15.

Tips for Grade 1 math

  • Practice the facts that make 10 first, such as 6 + 4 and 7 + 3. They make larger sums easier.
  • For tens and ones, use bundles of 10 sticks and loose sticks to build numbers.
  • Ask your child to say the number sentence out loud for each word problem.
