Year 9 Maths Test is a free online practice test with 15 questions on algebra, simultaneous equations, straight lines, pythagoras, trigonometry, indices, standard form, percentages, polygons, volume, probability and factorising. The questions use equations, simultaneous equations, straight lines, Pythagoras, trigonometry, indices, standard form, percentages, volume, probability and factorising. The test scores itself, and it shows the correct answer and an explanation for every question you miss.
Take it in test mode to see your score and answers at the end, or in practice mode to check each answer straight away. A printable version and an answer key are included, and the test takes about 32 minutes.

How the test works
Test mode and practice mode
In test mode you answer every question first and see your score, the time you took and the answers at the end. In practice mode you press Check after each answer to see right away whether it is correct, with the explanation.
How answers are scored
For questions with a number as the answer, you can type a whole number, a decimal such as 2.5, or a fraction such as 3/4. A pound sign is ignored, and a fraction and its decimal value count as the same answer. Multiple choice questions have one correct choice.
Printing the test and the answer key
Use Print the test for a paper copy with a space for each answer, and Print the answer key for the matching answers. Both print without the rest of the page.
Questions and answer key
The questions
- Solve for x: 2(3x − 4) = 4x + 6.

- A fair die is rolled twice. What is the probability of getting two sixes? Write a fraction.
- Which is the factorised form of x² + 5x + 6? (A. (x + 2)(x + 3); B. (x + 1)(x + 6); C. (x − 2)(x − 3); D. (x + 5)(x + 1))
Answers and explanations
| Question | Answer | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7 | Expand to get 6x − 8 = 4x + 6. Subtract 4x to get 2x − 8 = 6, add 8 to get 2x = 14, so x = 7. |
| 2 | 7 | Add the equations: 2x = 14, so x = 7. |
| 3 | 64 | a + b = 8, and 8² = 64. |
| 4 | 2 | Gradient = change in y ÷ change in x = 8 ÷ 4 = 2. |
| 5 | 7 | 3 × 4 = 12, and 12 − 5 = 7. |
| 6 | 12 | The height squared is 13² − 5² = 169 − 25 = 144, so the height is 12 m. |
| 7 | 5 | The opposite side is hypotenuse × sin 30° = 10 × 0.5 = 5. |
| 8 | 0.125 | 2⁻³ = 1 ÷ 2³ = 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125. |
| 9 | 4.5 | Move the decimal point 4 places to get 4.5, so 0.00045 = 4.5 × 10⁻⁴. |
| 10 | 60 | Each year earns 4% of £500, which is £20. Over 3 years that is £60. |
| 11 | 1,210 | After year 1 it is £1,100. After year 2 it is £1,100 × 1.1 = £1,210. |
| 12 | 120 | The interior angles of a hexagon add up to 4 × 180 = 720°, so each is 720 ÷ 6 = 120°. |
| 13 | 282.6 | Volume = π × r² × h = 3.14 × 9 × 10 = 282.6. |
| 14 | 1/36 | The probability of a six is 1/6, so two sixes is 1/6 × 1/6 = 1/36. |
| 15 | (x + 2)(x + 3) | Look for two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to 5. They are 2 and 3. |
Tips for Year 9 maths
- Check a simultaneous equation answer in both equations.
- The gradient of a line is the change in y divided by the change in x.
- Write SOH CAH TOA at the top of the page before a trigonometry question.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on this test?
There are 15 questions. Most students need about 32 minutes, but there is no time limit.
Can I print this test?
Yes. Use the Print the test button for the questions and Print the answer key for the answers. The full question list and answer key are also on this page.

Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up. Your best score is kept only in your own browser.
Is a maths test the same as a math test?
Yes. Maths is the UK spelling and math is the US spelling of the same subject. This test uses pounds and metric units and is written for UK school years.
What should I do if I miss questions?
Look at the skills table on your result page, read the explanations for the questions you missed, and take the test again. If a step in your working looks wrong, the answer checker on this site can help you find the slip.
